Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album about Black identity and history is Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, through Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records. It began as a film-length visual project broadcast on HBO and accompanied by an album of the same name. The album blends R&B, pop, rock, blues, country, reggae, and spoken-word passages.
Its structure follows stages of emotional recovery, including intuition, denial, anger, apathy, emptiness, accountability, reform, forgiveness, hope, and redemption. The work also draws on Black Southern imagery and features appearances by artists including Serena Williams, Zendaya, and Amanda Shires.
Lemonade received widespread critical acclaim and earned nine Grammy nominations. Its single “Formation” won Best Music Video and Best Rap/Sung Performance. The album was Beyoncé’s sixth solo studio album and followed the surprise release of her self-titled 2013 visual album, which is a frequent source of confusion between the two projects.
