What is the name of AC/DC's longest-serving bassist?

The story behind the answer

Cliff Williams is AC/DC’s longest-serving bassist.

Williams joined AC/DC in 1977, replacing Mark Evans, and made his recording debut with the band on Powerage in 1978. He remained the group’s bassist through major albums including Highway to Hell, Back in Black, For Those About to Rock We Salute You, The Razors Edge, and Black Ice. His steady bass lines and backing vocals helped anchor AC/DC’s stripped-down hard-rock sound.

Williams briefly announced his retirement after the Rock or Bust World Tour, which concluded in 2016. He returned when AC/DC reunited in 2018 and appeared on the 2020 album Power Up. That long tenure is why he is generally identified as the band’s longest-serving bassist, even though other players have held the position for shorter periods.

The alternatives describe different AC/DC musicians. Mark Evans was the bassist before Williams, Paul Matters had a short early association with the band, and Chris Slade is primarily known as an AC/DC drummer. In 2024, Chris Chaney toured as a temporary bassist while Williams was not performing live.
