The AC/DC guitarist known for wearing a school uniform on stage is Angus Young. His schoolboy outfit, energetic movements, and Gibson SG guitar became one of rock music’s most recognizable stage images.
Young was born in Glasgow in 1955 and moved with his family to Sydney, Australia. He co-founded AC/DC with his older brother Malcolm Young in 1973. Angus became the band’s lead guitarist and a key songwriter, while Malcolm supplied the powerful rhythm-guitar foundation that drove many of AC/DC’s recordings.
The school uniform began as a stage costume suggested by Angus’s sister Margaret. Young had experimented with other personas, including Spider-Man and Zorro, before settling on the schoolboy look. The original costume was made by Margaret, and Young later used his uniform from Ashfield Boys High School when the first one wore out.
His stage act also includes a version of Chuck Berry’s duckwalk, explosive guitar solos, and exaggerated physical comedy. Angus is sometimes confused with Malcolm Young, who also played guitar and co-founded AC/DC, but Malcolm did not wear the signature school uniform. Angus remained AC/DC’s only continuous member and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2003.
