What is the minimum weight of an Olympic women's javelin?

The story behind the answer

The minimum weight of an Olympic women’s javelin is 600 grams.

The women’s senior javelin has a minimum mass of 600 g and a length between 2.20 and 2.30 metres under international specifications. Athletes throw it from a runway, releasing it before the foul line and aiming for a pointed-end-first landing inside the sector.

The men’s senior javelin weighs 800 g and is longer, so the two implements are not interchangeable. Javelins used in youth competitions may have different specifications, which is why published weights can vary outside senior Olympic competition.

The women’s Olympic javelin was introduced at the 1932 Los Angeles Games. Modern javelins are designed to land tip-first for a valid mark; a throw that lands flat or tail-first does not count, even if it travels a long distance.
