What is the maximum score with three darts in standard darts?

The story behind the answer

The maximum score with three darts in standard darts is 180.

A player achieves 180 by hitting treble 20 with all three darts. Each treble 20 is worth 60, so the total is 60 + 60 + 60. In professional matches, an announcer may call this a “maximum.”

The 180 is a scoring achievement, not a checkout. A player cannot finish a 501 double-out leg by scoring 180 because the final dart does not land in a double or the bullseye. The highest possible checkout is instead 170, using two treble 20s and the bullseye.

Although treble 20 is the usual route, no other board combination can equal 180 because 60 is the highest value for one dart. A dart that misses the treble ring scores less, even if it remains in the 20 segment. Consecutive 180s are a major feature of high-level scoring and can rapidly reduce a player’s remaining total.
