What is the maximum resolution targeted by Xbox Series X games?

The story behind the answer

Xbox Series X games target 4K resolution. Microsoft designed the console to support gaming at up to 3840 by 2160 pixels, commonly called 4K or Ultra HD, alongside high frame rates and hardware-accelerated features.

“Target” is important because individual games choose their own rendering modes. Some titles use native 4K, while others employ dynamic resolution or reconstruction techniques to balance image quality, performance, and visual effects. Many games also offer a performance mode aimed at 120 frames per second on compatible displays.

Xbox Series S is a different machine with a lower performance target, generally aimed at 1440p gaming and able to upscale output to 4K for supported displays. The two consoles launched together, but their resolution goals should not be treated as identical.
