An Xbox 360 console supports up to four players locally, depending on the game and its control scheme.
The Xbox 360 was designed around local multiplayer as well as Xbox Live play. A single console could recognize multiple controllers, allowing compatible games to support split-screen or shared-screen sessions without requiring each player to own a separate system.
Four is the console’s commonly cited local-controller limit, but it does not mean every Xbox 360 game supports four simultaneous participants. Individual games set their own player counts, and some use fewer players locally while allowing larger matches online.
This local limit is also different from Xbox Live’s online capacity. Online multiplayer limits varied by game, service design, and match type. Accessories such as the Kinect sensor introduced additional interaction methods, but they did not raise the standard four-controller local limit.
