What is the listed running time of Metallica, commonly called The Black Album?

Metallica, commonly called The Black Album, has a listed running time of 62 minutes and 40 seconds.

That duration covers the album’s original 12-song program, which moves from the explosive opening of “Enter Sandman” through songs such as “Sad but True,” “The Unforgiven,” and “Nothing Else Matters.” The record is long enough to use much of a compact disc’s capacity while still presenting a tightly sequenced main album.

The running time belongs to the original 1991 studio album. Anniversary editions and expanded releases can contain demos, live recordings, alternate mixes, and other bonus material, so their total play time is not the same as the original album’s listed length.

Running times are also easy to confuse with Metallica’s earlier albums. Master of Puppets is listed at 54:52, while Kill ’Em All is listed at 51:20. Those figures belong to different records in the band’s catalog.
