What is the largest ocean on Earth, according to the Pacific Ocean article?

The story behind the answer

The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean on Earth.

It covers about 165.25 million square kilometres, making it larger than all of Earth’s land area combined. The Pacific stretches from Asia and Australia in the west to North and South America in the east, and from the Arctic Ocean toward the Southern Ocean.

Its name comes from the Latin Mare Pacificum, meaning “peaceful sea,” a name associated with Ferdinand Magellan’s voyage in the early 16th century. The ocean is also the deepest, containing the Mariana Trench and Challenger Deep.

A common mix-up is confusing the Pacific with the Atlantic because the Atlantic is historically prominent in European exploration. However, the Pacific is both wider and deeper. Its enormous area also contains thousands of islands, including many in Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia.
