Which city is home to the Taj Mahal?

The story behind the answer

The city of Agra is home to the Taj Mahal.

The Taj Mahal is a white-marble mausoleum on the southern bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Mughal emperor Shah Jahan commissioned it as a tomb for his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631. Construction began soon afterward and continued for many years; the principal mausoleum was substantially complete by the 1640s.

The complex includes the main tomb, a mosque, a matching guesthouse, a formal garden, and monumental gateways. Its architecture combines Persian, Central Asian, and Indian traditions. The large dome, four minarets, pietra dura inlay, and carefully planned symmetry are among its best-known features.

The Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Mughal architecture. Agra was also a major Mughal capital and contains other important monuments, including Agra Fort. The Taj Mahal is therefore associated with Agra, not India’s current capital, New Delhi.
