Into which sea does the Nile River empty?
Answer
Mediterranean Sea
Answer
Mediterranean Sea
The Nile River empties into the Mediterranean Sea.
The river flows generally northward through northeastern Africa before forming the Nile Delta in Egypt. The delta is a broad, fertile region where the river divides into distributary channels before reaching the Mediterranean coast. This geographic pattern made the lower Nile exceptionally important for agriculture and settlement.
The Nile has two principal tributaries: the White Nile, whose headwaters are associated with the Lake Victoria basin, and the Blue Nile, which rises in Ethiopia. They meet at Khartoum in Sudan. The Blue Nile contributes much of the river’s seasonal flow and sediment.
The Nile is often described as the world’s longest river, although measurements and comparisons with the Amazon have been debated. That debate does not affect its mouth: the Nile’s northern outlet is the Mediterranean, not the Red Sea, despite Egypt’s access to both bodies of water.
