Which country contains the ancient Nazca Lines?
Answer
Peru
Answer
Peru
The country containing the ancient Nazca Lines is Peru.
The Nazca Lines are enormous geoglyphs in the arid coastal plain of southern Peru, especially around the Nazca and Palpa regions. They include straight lines, geometric shapes, and images such as hummingbirds, monkeys, spiders, and condors. The designs were made by removing dark surface stones to expose lighter ground beneath.
Most of the lines are associated with the Nazca culture, which flourished roughly from 200 BCE to 600 CE, although some geoglyphs predate it. The desert’s exceptional dryness helped preserve the markings for centuries. Their original purposes remain debated, with theories involving ritual activity, water, pilgrimage, and astronomical observations.
The lines are not best explained as landing strips for spacecraft; that popular claim has no archaeological support. German archaeologist Maria Reiche devoted decades to studying and protecting them. UNESCO listed the Nazca Lines as a World Heritage Site in 1994.
