What is the largest island belonging to Sweden?
Answer
Gotland
Answer
Gotland
Gotland is the largest island belonging to Sweden.
Gotland lies in the Baltic Sea, east of mainland Sweden, and covers about 3,140 square kilometres. Its principal town is Visby, a remarkably well-preserved medieval city surrounded by stone walls. Visby became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 because of its historic architecture and role in Hanseatic trade.
The island’s limestone bedrock produces distinctive sea stacks, caves, and coastal landscapes. Gotland also has a strong agricultural tradition and is known for its native Gotland sheep and regional foods.
Gotland is often confused with Öland, another Swedish Baltic island. Öland is long and narrow and lies close to the province of Småland, but it is considerably smaller. Gotland has also had strategic importance because of its central position in the Baltic Sea, especially during periods of regional naval competition.
