What is the ISO 4217 code for the Swiss franc?

The story behind the answer

The ISO 4217 code for the Swiss franc is CHF.

CHF combines the internationally used abbreviation for Switzerland, “CH,” from the country’s Latin name Confoederatio Helvetica, with “F,” standing for franc. ISO 4217 codes are three-letter identifiers used by banks, financial institutions and payment systems.

The Swiss franc is the currency of Switzerland and Liechtenstein. It is issued by the Swiss National Bank, while Liechtenstein uses Swiss franc notes and coins under its monetary arrangements with Switzerland.

CHF is not the same as the codes for Scandinavian currencies such as Sweden’s SEK, Norway’s NOK or Denmark’s DKK. The Swiss franc is also commonly regarded as a major safe-haven currency because of Switzerland’s financial reputation and political stability.
