The ISO 4217 code for the Australian dollar is AUD.
AUD is the three-letter international code used by banks, financial markets, payment systems and currency converters. The first two letters identify Australia under the ISO country-code system, while the final letter commonly identifies the currency itself.
The Australian dollar replaced the Australian pound on 14 February 1966, when Australia changed from a pounds-shillings-pence system to decimal currency. The new dollar was divided into 100 cents, making everyday calculations simpler.
The Australian dollar is also used in several Pacific territories, including Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Norfolk Island and the Australian Antarctic Territory. It is one of the world’s heavily traded currencies and is often grouped with other commodity-linked currencies because Australia is a major exporter of minerals and agricultural products.
