What is the highest peak of the Hindu Kush?

The highest peak of the Hindu Kush is Tirich Mir, rising to 7,708 metres in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Tirich Mir stands in the Chitral District near the Afghan border and is the highest mountain in the Hindu Kush range. It is also commonly described as the highest peak outside the combined Himalaya–Karakoram mountain system. Its great elevation and isolated prominence make it a major landmark of northern Pakistan.

The mountain has several spellings, including Terich Mir, Terichmir, and Turch Mir, which can make it appear under different names in maps and reference works. “Tirich Mir” is a standard English form and is the answer a general-knowledge quiz expects.

The summit was first climbed in 1950 by a Norwegian-Pakistani expedition involving A. Næss, Per Kvernberg, Henry Berg, and T. Streather. Local traditions also give the mountain a powerful supernatural character: Kalash stories associate it with the goddess Krumai, while Chitrali folklore describes it as a fortress of mountain fairies.
