What is the first track on the vinyl side B of Metallica's The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

“The Unforgiven” is the first track on the vinyl side B of Metallica's The Black Album.

The original vinyl sequencing divides the 12 songs into four sides: tracks 1–3 on side A, tracks 4–6 on side B, tracks 7–9 on side C, and tracks 10–12 on side D. Because “The Unforgiven” is track four, it begins side B.

The song follows “Enter Sandman,” “Sad but True,” and “Holier than Thou” in the album's overall sequence. It stands out for its dramatic arrangement, introspective lyrics, and use of cellos, an unusual color for a traditional heavy-metal recording.

“The Unforgiven” was released as the album's second single on October 28, 1991. Its title later became the basis for two additional Metallica songs, “The Unforgiven II” and “The Unforgiven III,” although neither appears on The Black Album. The original is therefore the first entry in that later trilogy.
