What is the diameter of the senior women's shot used in Olympic shot put competition?

The story behind the answer

The senior women's shot used in Olympic competition has a diameter of 95 to 110 millimetres.

The women's shot weighs 4 kilograms, but the rules specify a diameter range rather than one single diameter. This allows approved equipment to differ slightly while maintaining the required mass and shape. The shot is a solid, smooth sphere, normally made from metal or another suitable dense material.

Shot putters hold the implement close to the neck and put it from inside a circular throwing area. The event is not a conventional throw: the rules require a pushing action, and athletes must leave the circle from the rear half after the shot lands. The diameter range is often confused with the men's specification, which is larger because the senior men's shot weighs 7.26 kilograms. Olympic equipment rules also distinguish the shot from the discus, hammer and javelin.
