What is the capital of Zimbabwe?

The story behind the answer

What is the capital of Zimbabwe? Harare is the capital and largest city of Zimbabwe.

The city was founded in 1890 by the Pioneer Column, a force associated with the British South Africa Company. It was originally named Fort Salisbury, later shortened to Salisbury, after the British prime minister Lord Salisbury. The settlement grew into the administrative and commercial centre of Southern Rhodesia.

Salisbury remained the capital when Southern Rhodesia became self-governing and later when it formed part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. After Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980, the city was renamed Harare on 18 April 1982, the second anniversary of independence. The new name refers to Neharawa, a local chief associated with the area.

Harare stands on Zimbabwe's high central plateau and is often called the “Sunshine City.” It is sometimes confused with Bulawayo, another major Zimbabwean city, but Bulawayo is not the national capital.
