What is the capital of Zambia?

The story behind the answer

What is the capital of Zambia? Lusaka is the capital and largest city of Zambia.

Lusaka developed on Zambia’s central plateau and became an important settlement during the colonial period. It was established in 1905 and named after Lusaka, a local headman of the Soli people. Its position near major routes helped it grow as an administrative and commercial centre in what was then Northern Rhodesia.

The city briefly lost some importance after Salisbury, now Harare, became the capital of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in 1953. When Northern Rhodesia became the independent Republic of Zambia in 1964, Lusaka was chosen as the national capital. Government offices, the University of Zambia, and major transport facilities expanded rapidly afterward.

Lusaka is not the same as Livingstone, which is famous for its proximity to Victoria Falls and served as an earlier colonial capital. Lusaka is Zambia’s political centre, housing institutions including the National Assembly, State House, and High Court.
