What is the capital of Vanuatu?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Vanuatu is Port Vila. It is located on Efate, the country’s third-largest island and part of Shefa Province.

Port Vila is Vanuatu’s largest city as well as its political, commercial, and economic centre. The city sits on Efate’s southwestern coast beside a sheltered harbour, which helped it develop as an important port and administrative settlement.

Vanuatu is an island country made up of more than 80 islands in the southwestern Pacific. Although Port Vila is the national capital, it is not on Vanuatu’s largest island, Espiritu Santo; that island’s main town is Luganville. Tanna is another major island, but its principal settlement is Lenakel, not the capital.

The city is often shortened locally to “Vila.” It is also home to Parliament, government offices, international businesses, and Bauerfield International Airport, making it the country’s main gateway for visitors and trade.
