What is the capital of Tunisia?
Answer
Tunis
Answer
Tunis
The capital of Tunisia is Tunis. The city lies in northeastern Tunisia beside Lake of Tunis and the Gulf of Tunis, making it both a political center and a gateway to the Mediterranean.
Tunis grew in importance near the ancient city of Carthage, but it has its own long history. The city was established as an important settlement under Arab rule in the 7th century and became Tunisia’s capital in 1159 under the Almohad dynasty. Its historic medina contains hundreds of monuments, including mosques, palaces, markets, and religious schools.
Modern Tunis combines the old medina with a newer European-influenced district centered on Avenue Habib Bourguiba. The broader metropolitan area, known as Grand Tunis, includes surrounding communities and is far larger than the municipality of Tunis itself.
Kairouan is famous for its religious and Islamic heritage, Sousse is a major coastal city, and Sfax is an important commercial center. All are significant Tunisian cities, but Tunis is the national capital.
