What is the capital of Togo?
Answer
Lomé
Answer
Lomé
The capital of Togo is Lomé. The city is Togo’s political capital, largest urban center, and principal port on the Gulf of Guinea.
Lomé grew from a coastal settlement associated with the Ewe people and became an important commercial center during the late nineteenth century. Germany established control over Togo in 1884, and Lomé served as the capital of German Togoland. After World War I, the territory was divided between Britain and France; French-administered Togo continued to use Lomé as its capital.
The city’s port helped make it a major regional trading center for products such as coffee, cocoa, cotton, and phosphates. Lomé is sometimes confused with other Togolese towns such as Atakpamé or Sokodé, but those are important regional centers rather than the national capital. Its coastal location also makes it a gateway between Togo and neighboring Ghana and Benin.
