What is the capital of Samoa?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Samoa is Apia. The city lies on the central north coast of Upolu, Samoa’s second-largest island, and serves as the country’s main political, commercial, and cultural centre.

Apia began as a village and expanded into a modern urban area during the nineteenth century. It became Samoa’s official capital in 1959, after the country moved toward independence from colonial administration. The wider urban area includes many villages that retain their own traditional leadership and genealogies under fa’a Samoa, Samoa’s customary social system.

Apia’s harbour is closely tied to the country’s history. On 15 March 1889, warships from Germany, the United States, and Britain were caught in a devastating cyclone after refusing to leave the harbour because of a tense naval standoff. Most were wrecked or badly damaged; HMS Calliope escaped and survived the storm.

Readers sometimes confuse Apia with Pago Pago, the capital of American Samoa, a separate United States territory. Suva is Fiji’s capital, while Nuku’alofa belongs to Tonga.
