What is the capital of Niue?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Niue is Alofi. It lies on the island’s western coast, centred on Alofi Bay near the only major break in the coral reef surrounding Niue.

Alofi is administratively divided into two villages: Alofi North and Alofi South. Together they serve as the capital, while Alofi South contains more of the government’s buildings. The town is small by national-capital standards; Niue’s entire population is only a few thousand people, and Alofi had 610 residents in the 2022 census.

Alofi suffered severe damage when Cyclone Heta struck Niue in January 2004. The hospital and many other buildings were destroyed, and several government facilities were later moved about three kilometres inland to the less exposed site of Fonuakula, still within Alofi South.

Niue is a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand. Mutalau, Hakupu, and Avatele are villages on Niue, but none is the national capital. Alofi International Airport and Sir Roberts Wharf provide the town’s main air and maritime connections.
