What is the capital of Namibia?
Answer
Windhoek
Answer
Windhoek
The capital of Namibia is Windhoek. It is the country’s largest city and its political, economic, and cultural centre, located in the central Khomas Highland at about 1,655 metres above sea level.
The area was settled near hot springs used by local pastoral communities. Orlam leader Jonker Afrikaner established a settlement there in 1840 and built a stone church. After conflict damaged the early settlement, German Major Curt von François founded a military post in 1890, beginning the city’s colonial-era development.
Windhoek became the administrative centre of German South West Africa and later remained important under South African administration. Since Namibia gained independence in 1990, it has continued as the national capital. Its name is often linked to Afrikaans words meaning “wind corner,” though other etymologies have also been proposed.
Rundu, Walvis Bay, and Swakopmund are important Namibian towns, but none is the national capital. Walvis Bay is a major Atlantic port, while Rundu is a regional centre in the northeast and Swakopmund is a prominent coastal resort town.
