What is the capital of Mexico?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Mexico is Mexico City. It is the country’s political, cultural, and economic centre, situated in the Valley of Mexico at an elevation of roughly 2,240 metres above sea level.

The modern metropolis grew from Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Mexica, or Aztec, Empire. Tenochtitlan was founded on an island in Lake Texcoco around 1325. Spanish forces captured it in 1521 and built Mexico City over much of the former island-and-lake settlement. Centuries of drainage and urban growth transformed the lake basin into today’s enormous inland capital.

Cancún is a major Caribbean resort, while Monterrey and Guadalajara are important Mexican cities, but none is the national capital. Mexico City is also commonly called CDMX, short for Ciudad de México. In 2016, the Federal District officially adopted the name Mexico City and gained a constitution and greater administrative autonomy.
