What is the capital of Mali?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Mali is Bamako. The city is Mali’s largest urban center and administrative heart, situated on the Niger River in the country’s southwestern region.

Bamako’s location helped it develop as a trading and transport center. The city lies near rapids separating the upper and middle Niger valleys, connecting river commerce with routes across West Africa. Its name is often explained through a Bambara expression associated with crocodiles, although historical interpretations of the etymology vary.

Bamako became the capital of French Sudan during the colonial period and retained that role when Mali gained independence in 1960. Today, it is administered as a separate capital district rather than as part of one of Mali’s ordinary regions. The city contains six communes and hosts major government institutions, markets, universities, and cultural organizations. Common wrong answers include Niamey, Ouagadougou, and Conakry, which are the capitals of Niger, Burkina Faso, and Guinea respectively.
