What is the capital of India?
Answer
New Delhi
Answer
New Delhi
The capital of India is New Delhi.
New Delhi became the capital during British rule when the government announced in 1911 that it would move the capital from Calcutta, now Kolkata, to Delhi. The new administrative city was planned south of the historic walled city.
Architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker designed much of New Delhi, including major government avenues and buildings. The capital was formally inaugurated on 13 February 1931. Today, New Delhi contains key institutions including Parliament, the Supreme Court, and the President's official residence.
A common mix-up is treating Delhi and New Delhi as identical. Delhi is the larger National Capital Territory, while New Delhi is a smaller municipality within it and the seat of India's central government.
