What is the capital of Guyana?
Answer
Georgetown
Answer
Georgetown
The capital of Guyana is Georgetown. It sits on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Demerara River and is the country’s largest city, as well as its main administrative, commercial, and financial centre.
The settlement grew under Dutch colonial rule and was known as Stabroek before British control brought the name Georgetown in 1812, honouring King George III. Guyana’s Parliament, executive offices, and highest court are located there, making the city the country’s political heart.
Georgetown is built on very low-lying coastal land, in places below high-tide level. Dutch-style canals, drainage sluices called kokers, and a seawall help protect it from flooding. Its wooden colonial buildings, Stabroek Market, and St. George’s Cathedral are among its best-known landmarks.
A common mix-up is choosing Paramaribo, the capital of neighbouring Suriname, or Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados. Georgetown is in mainland South America, although Guyana’s cultural and historical ties also connect it strongly with the Caribbean.
