What is the capital of Fiji?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Fiji is Suva. It sits on the southeastern coast of Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest island, beside Suva Harbour and Laucala Bay.

Suva became Fiji’s capital in 1877, replacing Levuka on the nearby island of Ovalau. Levuka’s narrow strip between steep hills and the sea left little room for expansion, while Suva offered a more practical site for a growing colonial administration. Government offices officially moved there in 1882.

Today, Suva is Fiji’s political, economic, and administrative centre. It is also the country’s major port and one of the South Pacific’s important regional hubs, hosting diplomatic missions, universities, international organisations, and cultural institutions. The city is known for a notably wet climate because nearby mountains catch moisture from the southeast trade winds.

A common mix-up is confusing Suva with Nadi, Fiji’s main tourism gateway and location of the country’s busiest international airport. Lautoka is another major city, while Levuka is historically important as Fiji’s former capital.
