What is the capital of Djibouti?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Djibouti is Djibouti.

Djibouti, also called Djibouti City, is the capital of the Republic of Djibouti. It stands on the coast of the Gulf of Tadjoura, near the entrance to the Red Sea, and serves as the country’s administrative, commercial, and maritime centre. The city’s strategic position has made it important for regional shipping and trade with Ethiopia.

The modern settlement was founded by the French in 1888 on land leased from Somali and Afar sultans. It later became the capital of French Somaliland and then of the French Territory of the Afars and Issas. After Djibouti gained independence on June 27, 1977, the city continued as the capital of the new republic.

Djibouti’s port and rail connections are especially significant because they provide Ethiopia, a landlocked neighbour, with access to international trade routes. The city is also home to foreign military facilities because of its position near the Bab-el-Mandeb strait. A common quiz trap is the wording: “Djibouti” is both the country’s name and the capital city’s name. Ali Sabieh is another Djiboutian city, while Hargeisa and Berbera are in Somaliland.
