What is the capital of China?

The story behind the answer

The capital of China is Beijing. Located in northern China, Beijing is the country’s political centre and the seat of the national government, including the National People’s Congress and the State Council.

The city has served as a capital under several Chinese dynasties. It became the capital of the Yuan dynasty in the 13th century, was chosen as the Ming capital in 1421, and remained central under the Qing dynasty. After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Beijing continued as the national capital.

Beijing is often confused with Shanghai because Shanghai is China’s largest financial and commercial hub, while Hong Kong is a special administrative region. Nanjing has also been a historic capital and remains the capital of Jiangsu province, but it is not China’s current national capital. Beijing is also famous for landmarks such as the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, and sections of the Great Wall.
