What is the capital of Benin?
Answer
Porto-Novo
Answer
Porto-Novo
The capital of Benin is Porto-Novo. It is the country’s official capital and the seat of its national legislature, although nearby Cotonou hosts the presidency and most government ministries.
Porto-Novo developed around a lagoon in southeastern Benin and has roots in Yoruba- and Gun-speaking kingdoms. The city was also connected to Portuguese maritime trade; its name means “New Port” in Portuguese. In 1900, it became the capital of French Dahomey, the colonial predecessor of modern Benin.
After Benin gained independence in 1960, Porto-Novo retained its constitutional status as capital. Cotonou, however, grew into the larger economic and administrative center, creating a common source of confusion in quizzes. Porto-Novo is also known for Afro-Brazilian architectural influences, royal history, markets, museums, and nearby links to Nigeria.
