What is the capital of Bangladesh?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Bangladesh is Dhaka. It is also the country’s largest city and its main political, economic, cultural, and educational center.

Dhaka’s urban history reaches back more than a millennium, but it rose to major prominence under the Mughal Empire. It became the capital of Bengal in 1610 and prospered as a center of river trade and muslin production. For a time, Mughal authorities called it Jahangirnagar, in honor of Emperor Jahangir.

The city later served as an administrative center under British rule, became the capital of East Pakistan in 1947, and was declared the capital of independent Bangladesh after the Liberation War in 1971. The name was formerly often written as Dacca. A common mix-up is confusing Dhaka with Chittagong, now usually called Chattogram, which is Bangladesh’s major port city but not its capital. Dhaka lies on the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta and is crossed by several important rivers.
