What is the capital of Argentina?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Argentina is Buenos Aires.

Buenos Aires is Argentina's largest city and sits on the western shore of the Río de la Plata estuary. Its location helped it develop into a major port and an important gateway for trade, migration, and cultural exchange.

The city was founded in 1536 by Pedro de Mendoza and re-established in 1580 by Juan de Garay after the first settlement had failed. Buenos Aires became the capital of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata in 1776, strengthening its regional importance.

Buenos Aires is officially the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, a separate federal district rather than a province. Mendoza and Rosario are important Argentine cities, while Córdoba is a major historical and university centre, but none is the national capital.
