What is the capital of Angola?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Angola is Luanda. Located on Angola's northern Atlantic coast, Luanda is the country's largest city, main port, and leading administrative and commercial center.

The Portuguese founded Luanda on January 25, 1576, under Paulo Dias de Novais, originally calling it São Paulo da Assunção de Loanda. Its coastal position made it a major port during Portuguese colonial rule and connected it to trade routes across the Atlantic. Luanda remained central to Angola's political life after independence in 1975.

Lobito is another important port city, while Huambo is a major inland city and Benguela is a historic coastal center. None is the national capital. Luanda's rapid growth has produced a huge metropolitan area, with dense historic districts alongside newer developments. The city also serves as the capital of Luanda Province.
