What is the capital of Afghanistan?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Afghanistan is Kabul. It is the country's largest city and its main political, cultural, and economic center.

Kabul lies in a high valley of the Hindu Kush at about 1,790 meters above sea level. The Kabul River runs through the city, which has long connected routes between Central and South Asia. Kabul became the capital of the Durrani Afghan state in 1776 under Timur Shah Durrani, who moved the capital from Kandahar.

A common mix-up is choosing Kandahar, another historically important Afghan city and the former Durrani capital. Herat and Mazar-i-Sharif are also major regional centers, but neither is the national capital. Kabul's history includes periods under British occupation, the Soviet-Afghan War, civil conflict in the 1990s, and the Taliban's return to the city in 2021.
