The British version of the Japanese business-pitch format Money Tigers is called Dragons' Den.
The programme takes its title from the investors' nickname: Dragons. Entrepreneurs enter a studio and present their businesses, products or ideas while the investors question them about sales, costs, valuation and ownership. A Dragon may then offer investment in exchange for an equity stake, although a pitch can also end without an agreement.
Money Tigers was the Japanese programme that supplied the original format. The British edition is one of several international adaptations, while the United States version is known as Shark Tank. These related titles are sometimes incorrectly treated as interchangeable, even though they are separate national productions.
The apostrophe in the British title is important: the official programme title is Dragons' Den, with the possessive apostrophe after the plural noun. The show first aired in Britain in 2005.
