What is the best-selling studio album by Fleetwood Mac?

The story behind the answer

“Rumours” is Fleetwood Mac’s best-selling studio album. Released in 1977, it has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, placing it among the best-selling albums in music history.

The album was recorded during an unusually turbulent period for the band. Relationships within the group were breaking down, including the divorcing McVies and the separation of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. Despite that strain, the musicians created a polished, tightly arranged record featuring four U.S. Billboard Hot 100 top-ten singles: “Go Your Own Way,” “Dreams,” “Don’t Stop,” and “You Make Loving Fun.”

Rumours topped the Billboard 200 for 31 non-consecutive weeks and won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. It is often confused with the band’s 1975 self-titled album, which also became a major commercial success, or with Tusk, the ambitious follow-up. Neither matched Rumours’ global sales. The album was also selected for preservation in the U.S. National Recording Registry in 2017.
