What is the basic monetary unit of Thailand?

The story behind the answer

The basic monetary unit of Thailand is the Thai baht.

The baht is Thailand’s official currency, issued by the Bank of Thailand. Its ISO 4217 code is THB, and one baht is divided into 100 satang. The currency symbol is ฿, although the word baht is normally written in English-language contexts.

The name baht originally referred to a traditional Thai unit of weight used for precious metals. It later became associated with the value of silver coinage and eventually developed into the country’s modern monetary unit. Thai banknotes depict members of the Chakri dynasty, including King Bhumibol Adulyadej on many modern issues.

The baht is sometimes confused with neighboring currencies because Thailand shares borders with countries using the kip, riel, ringgit, and kyat. Those currencies are separate national units with different codes and monetary authorities.
