What is Novak Djokovic's nationality?

The story behind the answer

Novak Djokovic’s nationality is Serbian. He was born in Belgrade, Serbia, and has represented Serbia throughout his professional tennis career.

Djokovic was born on 22 May 1987, when Serbia was part of the former country of Yugoslavia. He grew up in the Serbian ski resort of Kopaonik and began playing tennis at age four. His rise made him the first Serbian man to reach world No. 1 in the ATP rankings.

His national career includes major achievements for Serbia. Djokovic helped Serbia win its first Davis Cup title in 2010 and later won Olympic singles gold at the 2024 Paris Games. He has also frequently spoken about the importance of representing his country.

People sometimes confuse Serbian nationality with neighboring identities because Djokovic was born during a period of major political change in the Balkans. However, his sporting nationality and official representation are Serbian, not Bosnian, Montenegrin or Croatian.
