What is Noah's name in the Babylonian flood story of the Epic of Gilgamesh?

The story behind the answer

In the Babylonian flood story of the Epic of Gilgamesh, Noah’s counterpart is Utnapishtim.

Utnapishtim appears in Tablet XI of the Epic of Gilgamesh, where he tells Gilgamesh how the god Ea warned him about a devastating flood. Utnapishtim built a large boat, brought aboard family members and living creatures, and survived when the waters destroyed the surrounding world.

The episode shares notable motifs with Genesis, including divine warning, a constructed vessel, preservation of life, birds sent out after the flood, and a sacrifice after survival. Scholars generally study these similarities as part of the wider history of ancient Near Eastern flood traditions rather than treating the stories as identical versions.

Atrahasis is another important Babylonian flood survivor from a separate but related literary tradition. That name is a common wrong answer because the Atrahasis Epic also contains a flood narrative. In the Gilgamesh story specifically, the survivor who meets Gilgamesh is Utnapishtim.
