What is Mater’s full character name in Pixar’s Cars?

Mater’s full character name in Pixar’s Cars is Tow Mater.

Tow Mater is Radiator Springs’ rusty tow truck and Lightning McQueen’s closest friend. His name is a pun on “tow mater,” a pronunciation associated with “tomato,” and it also directly describes his job towing vehicles. The character’s speech, humor, and loyalty make him one of the franchise’s central figures.

Mater is voiced by comedian Larry the Cable Guy, whose performance uses a Southern-influenced comic style. Although he appears naïve, Mater is observant, brave, and exceptionally skilled at practical tasks. His friendship with McQueen helps the young racer understand the value of patience and community.

The name is sometimes shortened informally to Mater, but “Tow Mater” is the character’s canonical full name. He becomes especially prominent in Cars 2, where his accidental involvement drives much of the spy-comedy plot.
