What is a young goat commonly called?

The story behind the answer

A young goat is commonly called a kid.

The term applies to goat offspring from birth through the juvenile stage, although farmers may use more specific age descriptions in herd records. An adult female goat is a doe or nanny, and an adult male is a buck or billy. A castrated male is often called a wether.

Goat kids are born after a gestation of about 150 days, or roughly five months. They may be raised for meat, milk production, breeding, fiber, or as companion animals, depending on the breed and farming system.

Kid is not exclusive to goats in everyday English: it can also mean a child. In livestock terminology, however, the intended meaning is clear from context. A lamb is a young sheep, a calf is a young bovine, and a foal is a young horse, donkey, or related equid.
