What instrument does AC/DC's frontman Brian Johnson play?

The story behind the answer

AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson performs vocals, serving as the band’s lead singer rather than playing bass, drums, or guitar.

Johnson was born in England in 1947 and began his professional career as a singer. Before joining AC/DC, he was a founding member of the Newcastle-based glam rock band Geordie, which had UK success with songs including “All Because of You.” His powerful, raspy voice became a defining part of Geordie’s sound.

After AC/DC vocalist Bon Scott died in February 1980, the band auditioned Johnson as a replacement. Angus and Malcolm Young reportedly remembered Scott praising Johnson’s singing, and Johnson impressed the group by performing AC/DC material during his audition. He officially joined the band in 1980 and made his recording debut with Back in Black.

Johnson is sometimes associated with AC/DC’s guitar-heavy sound, but the instrumental roles belong to other members: Angus Young and Malcolm Young played guitar, Cliff Williams played bass, and Phil Rudd played drums. Johnson’s role has consistently been lead vocals, although he also co-wrote songs with the Young brothers.
