What instrument did John Densmore play in The Doors?

The story behind the answer

John Densmore played drums in The Doors. His jazz-influenced drumming was a defining part of the band’s sound, balancing Ray Manzarek’s keyboards, Robby Krieger’s guitar, and Jim Morrison’s vocals.

Densmore joined the group in 1965, after playing with Krieger in the Psychedelic Rangers and with Manzarek in an earlier group. He appeared on every Doors recording made during the band’s classic period. His approach drew heavily from jazz and world music, producing rhythms that were often leaner and more fluid than conventional rock drumming.

The Doors did not use a regular bass guitarist in their core lineup. Manzarek often played bass lines with his left hand on a keyboard, while studio musicians sometimes added bass guitar. That arrangement can cause confusion about the band’s instrumentation, but Densmore’s role remained drums and percussion. He continued with The Doors until the group dissolved in 1973.
