What historic highway town is the setting of Pixar's Cars?

The story behind the answer

Radiator Springs is the historic highway town where much of Pixar's Cars takes place.

Lightning McQueen reaches Radiator Springs after accidentally damaging the town's road while fleeing across the country. The residents require him to repair the road, giving him time to meet Doc Hudson, Sally Carrera, Mater and the other local characters.

The fictional town is presented as a former Route 66 community bypassed by a modern interstate. Its design draws on real Southwestern locations and landmarks that the filmmakers studied during research trips along Route 66.

Route 66 itself is not the town's name; it is the historic highway associated with the setting. Radiator Springs also appears in Cars 2, Cars 3 and the Cars-themed attractions at Disney parks.
