What height does Genesis give for Noah's Ark?
Answer
30 cubits
Answer
30 cubits
Genesis gives Noah’s Ark a height of 30 cubits.
Genesis 6:15 lists the vessel’s dimensions as 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. These proportions make the Ark a long, relatively low rectangular vessel rather than a conventional ship designed for speed. Genesis also specifies three decks and compartments for the people and animals.
A cubit was an ancient unit commonly based on the length of a forearm, but its exact historical value varied. For that reason, modern estimates of the Ark’s height differ. Using a cubit of roughly 45 centimetres would produce a height of about 13.5 metres, but that is an approximation rather than a measurement stated by Genesis.
The biblical dimensions have encouraged modern reconstructions and comparisons with large barges. Such models can illustrate the proportions, but they do not establish that an actual Ark has been found. The text itself is the source for the 30-cubit figure.
