Privet Drive is the fictional street where Harry Potter’s aunt and uncle live in J.K. Rowling’s novels.
Harry’s home is number 4 Privet Drive, in Little Whinging, Surrey. He lives there with his aunt Petunia Dursley, uncle Vernon Dursley, and cousin Dudley before learning that he is a wizard.
The ordinary suburban setting contrasts with the magical world Harry enters at Hogwarts. The Dursleys strongly prefer normality, and Rowling uses their neat, conventional neighbourhood to emphasize how unusual Harry’s hidden identity is.
Privet Drive also has an important protective function in the story. Because Harry shares his mother Lily’s blood through Petunia, the protection created by Lily’s sacrifice can be maintained at the Dursley home while Harry is still a minor. The address is therefore more than a simple setting.
